A Review Of Amigo Horse Rugs

By Marissa Velazquez

Horseware Ireland Ltd has an excellent reputation. Some would say they set the industry standard. They strive to innovate, not imitate. All products undergo periodic reviews to make sure they're made using the latest and best materials and design options. Amigo horse rugs are budget friendly, high quality, comfortable and safe for horses to wear.

Blankets are necessary to protect animals from the cold, rain, dirt, and mud. Some offer added protection from ultraviolet rays and annoying insects. Sheets protect from dust or dirt without adding warmth. For a stabled animal in winter, use a stable blanket. Turnout rugs should be warm and waterproof. A high quality blanket that fits properly won't slip or leak. Use a Cooler to protect from chills after exercise on a cold day.

When stabled in winter, a stable blanket is sufficient protection. Stable blankets also serve as a liner under a turnout blanket in cold weather. Turnout blankets are waterproof and durable to withstand the rigors of outside wear and tear. Amigo turnout rugs include a breathable nylon lining and are available in 3 weights. Hoods are also available.

A horse with a clipped coat will need more protection than an animal with a winter coat. Older animals, as well as colts and fillies, need extra protection from the elements. An animal moved from a warmer climate will need a warmer rug than the local residents. To maintain a show quality coat, blanket early in the fall to keep the coat clean, short, and even in appearance.

Horses need at least 1 sheet and 1 turnout rug. In cold climates, they need an inner blanket as a liner for warmth, and a waterproof turnout rug. Contagious and expensive to cure skin diseases will spread quickly if your animals share blankets. Each should have their own set, preferably 2 sets so 1 can be washed while the other set is worn.

Oversized rugs rub, causing blisters. They can slip causing a fall. Dirt and insects are trapped inside the liner, causing further irritation. Too small blankets leave skin exposed to the elements. They rub uncomfortably causing pain and blistering. A blanketed horse should be able to lower its head to graze, and lift its tail without obstruction. Your hand should fit inside the blanket at the withers. Determine size to by measuring from the center of the chest to the tail along the side of the animal. If the measurement is an odd number, or if your horse has a thick coat, round up.

Use a blanket when it rains or when the thermometer dips below 55 degrees. Start with a lightweight blanket. Between 30-40 degrees, most horses are more comfortable with a medium weight rug. Below 30 degrees, add a liner. Below 20 degrees, use a heavy weight rug with a stable rug as a liner.
