Weight Loss

By Tammara Odessa

It is never easy for a person to shed weight. A saying that many of us have heard in our lives is: 'a minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips'. The growing obesity problem in society in many countries causes many other issues for people, things like joint problems, and more serious heart disease or cerebrovascular disease as well. The general public have now become more aware of these risks and losing weight has pretty much become the number one priority of people when it comes to New Year resolutions.

What should someone do to lose weight properly? Can healthier food choices and exercise do it all? Let's take a closer look at this.

Diet

The area that seems to get the most focus is diet for weight loss. There are a variety of different diet plans that are now available commercially these days. Diet plans like Atkins have been popular, the hCG diet is another one, there are many more out there. The goal is the same - to burn fat, maintain muscle mass and lose weight at the same time. We all need to keep in mind that certain types if dieting can actually be bad for you, so talk to an expert in the field. If someone cuts certain types of food completely out of the diet, it can have negative effects due to missing nutrients. Dieticians are good at helping someone choose the diet that is best for them to lose weight in a healthy way.

Simple steps include eating more fruit and vegetable, cutting down on red meat and fried foods and making sure to eat oily fish.

The Exercise Aspect

We are all well aware that doing exercise is a great way to burn calories. Cardiovascular exercise in particular burns calories fast, depleting glycogen stores and burning subcutaneous fat as well. There is evidence to suggest that intra-abdominal fat and obesity has a direct link with the development of insulin resistance and subsequently cardiovascular disease. The basic idea when attempting to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in every day, and a sensible diet and regular exercise is the way to achieve this.

Exercise requires commitment and focus. It is always best to exercise with a partner who will motivate you and make you work harder. Exercises such as jogging, brisk walks, cycling, cross training and even swimming increase the heart rate and build cardiovascular fitness while burning fat.

Achieving goals

We all know that the best way to shed excess weight is through the proper use of exercise and sensible diet. Motivating oneself to get started can be hard, and these days programmes are available that seem to be reasonably successful for many individuals. There are also many choices available when it comes to fitness facilities, and personal trainers are also available to assist people in their weight loss goals. Other types of assistance is available from weight loss clubs that will actually deliver healthy meals right to people's homes, which helps them to have easy access to nutritious food. There is no excuse!

Summary

Weight loss is good as long as it is performed in a healthy way. Using time tested exercise and dietary routines can help tremendously. Be sure to consult a dietician or see your physician in order to set out a plan to lose weight safely and effectively.
