Treating Acne With Chemical Peels

By Marlene Ataine

Almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point, in some it can be mild with just a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often. However acne can be more severe in other teenagers, giving rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, and in more severe cases larger red, inflamed spots called cysts. The skin tone can change as a result of these pimples, spots and cysts, and take on a darker tone, or even scarring if it is really bad.

Although acne does not pose any danger, it can result in scarring of the skin. The pores (tiny holes) in human skin are connected to oil glands underneath it. Follicles are like small canals that connect the pores to the glands. These glands produce Sebum, an oily liquid. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of the skin. A small hair grows through the follicle out of the skin. When these follicles get blocked, oil accumulates under the skin and pimples develop. Hormonal changes during puberty can result in more oil in the skin, so this is why many teenagers have acne. Adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne, so it's not just teenagers who suffer from acne.

Sometimes adult acne is caused by overproduction of or hypersensitivity to the male hormones called androgens. But an imbalance in both male and female hormones (estrogen) can also cause breakouts. This can happen during a woman's pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Occasionally, some cosmetics or medications like corticosteroids can also cause acne to develop.

A very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne is a chemical peel. By exfoliating the skin, chemical peels take effect; this process cleanses the skin of the dirt and removes dead skin cells which have clogged the pores. This causes fewer acne pimples and spots to form. Skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne may also be helped by chemical peels.

Chemical peels are a very cost effective option for acne treatment. This acne treatment is also very safe. The top layers of the skin are exfoliated and cleansed by superficial chemical skin peels that remove all the dead skin cells. A course of six peels, spaced apart by one week minimum, is usually recommended. This will result in a noticeable improvement in the skin texture and visibly reduce the amount of acne breakouts.

Only a credible skin care clinic should be approached for your acne treatment chemical peel. Before you have chemical peels to treat your acne, obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type by consulting a reputable clinic.
