The Non Invasive Process Known as Microdermabrasion

By Mats Sumellin

There is a method for rejuvenation of the skin that is gaining acceptance in recent years called microdermabrasion. A patient can have this done for relatively little cost, and it is noninvasive and is not painful. Those who would like some skin enhancement but lasers, injections or other cosmetic procedures are worrisome, it is a good option.

Microdermabrasion can soften fine lines and wrinkles, decrease pore size, help smooth coarsely textured skin, reduce superficial hyper-pigmentation (age spots), and decrease the appearance of scarring. The procedure actually makes it easier for your skin care products to penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen which gives skin its youthful appearance.

Microdermabrasion is a powerful exfoliation performed with special equipment. This will result in the removal of dead skin cells that have accumulated on the top layer of the skin.

Crystal microdermabrasion equipment involves a hand held wand that sucks air inside of it, using a compressor. A vacuum is produced as the wand makes contact with a patient's skin. Dead skin cells are removed from the top layers of the skin as they collide with the aluminum oxide crystals. A separate tube on the wand simply sucks the air along with the dead skin cells and crystals into the machine.

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion uses the same vacuum technology and hand-held wand, but there aren't any crystals moving through the tip. Similarly, a vacuum is used but this time, the diamond tip does the work of dislodging the dead skin cells. Depending on the condition and type of the patient's skin, the specific type of tip is chosen. The discomfort is slightly increased for a patient using diamond-tips, however, crystal microdermabrasion has the same effect. It is also usually better for sensitive skin.

The effects of this process are already very striking, and if the technician is skilled and experienced, it is even better. For skin that is rougher, more treatments will be required for the desired effect, and in most cases several treatments are necessary. How a patient responds to the initial treatment will help to direct the provider to complete a plan that will deliver the results needed with the correct amount of visits to achieve the expected effect. The first treatments usually bring very positive results and make a patient happy, but to make sure all issues with skin complexion are addressed, more sessions are typically needed. For the treatments to provide long lasting results, every few months a session should be scheduled. And because the machine can be adjusted depending on skin type and condition, even people with sensitive skin can get a treatment from a skilled professional.

Side effects do result at times from microdermabrasion, although they are usually minimal from this non-surgical treatment. As mentioned, the microdermabrasion treatment sandblasts the skin which will slightly traumatize it and create a reaction. Skin sensitivity sometimes occurs, along with minimal bruising and skin can be slightly red and tight feeling. This is normal and will only last several hours. Abrasions that are relatively minor have been known to occur, isolated minor bleeding can also happen. Risks are very small from microdermabrasion, the materials used are not harmful at all, and there is practically no risk that is associated with these procedures. When compared to facial peels that use lasers or chemical agents it is much safer.
