Inexpensive Pool Party Games For Kids

By Michelle Howe

Pool party games for kids are a great way to keep all of the little ones entertained. On hot Summer days, water based games are a great way to stay cool. These types of games also cost very little money to arrange. Games can be played with just a few kids or an entire crowd.

An alternative spin on the classic pinata game can be great fun during a pool party. Instead of blindfolding the kids and having them attempt to smack at the pinata blindly, incorporate the pool in to the process. Ditch the blindfold and have the children attempt a swing while jumping into the water. Inside, toys that would float easily can be hidden. This way, nothing sinks to the bottom and no candy gets wet and ruined.

Inexpensive items like swim goggles, water guns and other toys that can be played with while wet are all acceptable options. By throwing in some fun toys and some useful items, the prizes become more interesting. Candy is always a good choice, of course, but should be protectively wrapped so that water doesn't ruin it. A great place to find a variety of cheap items to use are those stores where everything is only $1.

Try asking the kids for suggestions. They are sure to have several great ideas for inexpensive items that could be placed inside. In fact, they might enjoy the idea of jumping and trying to hit the pinata so much that they won't even care if their are prizes inside at all. After all, the main fun in the game comes from jumping into the water as you swing.

Another fun game would be to toss a variety of prizes out into the middle of the pool. Make all of the kids wait around the edges until everything has been tossed in, then turn them loose. Just watching all of the chaos as they try to grab arm loads of prizes and swim at the same time can be quiet entertaining for the adults.

Relay style games are another good option for pool side games. Start by tying to ropes to one side and stretching them across to the other side to be tied. The kids can be placed in different teams at this point. Each team must have one person at a time cross the pool on something that floats, as they pull themselves along with the rope. The goal is to get each team member across and back first.

Instead of using inflatables for this game, life jackets could also be used. They provide the buoyancy need for the game and have the added benefit of safety. This would allow even smaller children, who are unable to swim, to be able to participate. Naturally, an adult should be in the water nearby in case any one needs help though.

It doesn't matter which pool party games for kids that are played, safety is always the main priority. The games should be appropriate for the age of the children playing them. Everyone should have adequate safety gear while in the water as well. A close eye on them as they play is very important for preventing any accidents from occurring.
